Palmela: European Wine City of 2012

Palmela (Portugal) was awarded the title of European Wine City of 2012 by RECEVIN – the European Network of Wine Cities. Wineries and institutions are working together to present a festive calendar, filled with the best we have to offer. Throughout the year, traditional cuisine, gourmet pastries and delicacies and remarkable wines will be the stars of numerous festivals, fairs, exhibits and special events. Music, theater, dance, handicrafts, seminars, debates and training courses complete the program.
Located 40 km south of Lisbon, Palmela stands in the Setúbal Peninsula Wine Region, with 900 wine producers, an estimated production of 34 million liters of wine and hundreds of prizes worldwide. The strong reds and fruity whites come hand in hand with the Moscatel de Setúbal, a sweet fortified wine, with unmistakable aromas and flavors, created from Muscat grapes. In the heart of the historical center, Palmela is home to the Wine Trail House, starting point to discover the Setúbal Peninsula Wine Route, schedule guided tours of the wineries and explore a fine selection of wines and regional products.
Between rivers Sado and Tagus, looking straight into the Atlantic and spreading along the magnificent Arrábida Natural Park, Palmela has more than a thousand years of history to unveil. White sand beaches, touristic resorts, golf courses, kart tracks, a wide range of cultural and leisure activities and all the hospitality of a people that knows how to make you feel welcome… discover a region, discover Palmela.
