The InterContinental Group Announces New Hotels for Lisbon

The InterContinental group has reconfirmed the opening of a hotel in Lisbon under its Indigo brand. It will be a boutique hotel in a former convent downtown and the scheduled date is 2014.

The same group also owns the Holiday Inn brand and plans one for Avenida da Liberdade and a Holiday Inn Express in a location to be determined.

The convent that will be turned into Lisbon’s 4-star Indigo Lisbon Old Town Hotel is located on Rua de São Nicolau and dates from 1648 (one of the rare pre-1755 earthquake constructions downtown). It was partially destroyed by the earthquake but the circular church and octagonal dome still survive.

Its interior which is now empty will be divided into 139 rooms, plus conference and meeting rooms, a gym, lounge, bar and restaurant.

The announcement was made during the one-year anniversary of Porto’s Intercontinental Hotel which currently ranks number one in Europe in guest satisfaction (91%) and is among the group’s top five in value for money.
