Solares de Portugal: Healthy minds and bodies

Stay at one of the comfortable Solares de Portugal and enjoy a wellness and relaxation programme at one of the region’s spas.

Spas are being sought after more and more nowadays as a way of counteracting the stresses and strains produced by our busy and dynamic lifestyle. For this reason, the great abundance of springs of mineral and medicinal water to be found all over Portugal, some of which have been famous since Roman times, may represent an excellent suggestion for a visit.

In the far north of the country are Quinta de Santo António, Casa da Eira and Quinta da Calçada, which are ideal starting points for visiting the spas of Monção and Melgaço.

Or you can follow the winding roads leading into the Peneda-Gerês National Park, an area of waterfalls and wild horses, where you will find Casa de Avelar nestling at the foot of the mountains of Serra do Soajo. Inside the park’s boundaries are the spa of Gerês and a number of lakes formed by dams, such as the Barragem da Caniçada, which are ideal for water sports. Close to the River Cávado is Quinta do Sorilhal, a manor house set in a rustic environment.

A short distance from Póvoa de Lanhoso, which for many years has traditionally been a centre for goldsmiths, is Casa de Alfena, with its beautiful gardens and waterfalls. In the surrounding district is Caldelas, one of the most sought after spas in Portugal.

Between Braga and Ponte de Lima, you can find a whole host of different choices for spending the night: Casa do Lago, in Bom Jesus, Quinta de São Bento, an old 17th-century house built close to a river beach, or Quinta do Casal, close to the old Road to Santiago de Compostela.

The spa of Eirôgo is close to Barcelos. There, you’ll find Quinta de Santa Comba, a beautiful 18th-century house where you can go horse-riding, Casa dos Assentos, Casa de Sequiade and Quinta do Sourinho, an estate where the house is built of granite.

At the 18th-century estate of Quinta da Picaria, you can enjoy all the perfect peace and quiet of the region and visit the Roman spa of Caldas da Saúde, nowadays offering a range of modern wellness programmes. The spa at Chaves, a city whose name derives from that of the Roman Emperor Flavius Vespasianus (Vespasian), has water that springs from the earth at a temperature of 73ºC. One kilometre away is Quinta da Mata, where you can go horse-riding or enjoy a relaxing sauna.

In Portugal’s Centre region, there is also a great abundance of thermal springs, such as Caldas da Felgueira, with the nearby Solar Abreu Madeira, and the spas of Buçaco, Curia or Luso. When you’re in this region, you can also stay at Vila Duparchy or Solar da Vacariça, two places that are ideal for resting your body and mind.

Further south in the Alentejo, you can combine the treatment you’re receiving at the spa of Cabeço de Vide with some healthy physical exercise, following the keep-fit course or going horse-riding at Quinta da Bela Vista. All this, of course, without forgetting to take a tour of the town of Castelo de Vide, where the estate is located, and its beautiful surrounding region.

If you’re visiting the Portuguese islands, then one of the highlights is Casa das Calhetas, on the island of São Miguel in the Azores, where you can benefit from the geothermal properties of the spa at Furnas in its idyllic setting looking out over the Atlantic Ocean and the mountains of Serra da Lagoa do Fogo.

In fact, you’ll find that all the manor houses of Portugal are idyllic places where you can enjoy some truly relaxing peace and quiet as you delight in the breathtaking views over the Atlantic Ocean or over some of the most beautiful landscapes of Portugal’s inland regions.

Portugal top of list at World Travel Awards 2012

The prestigious World Travel Awards 2012 acknowledged the Algarve as Europe’s top beach destination, and Portugal as Europe’s top golf destination.

Europe‘s travel elite, including senior tourism and international media from 35 different countries, gathered at the new Conrad Algarve hotel at Quinta do Lago on last 6th October, as the World Travel Awards (WTA) announced victorious brands including Lufthansa, Kempinski Hotels & Resorts, DFDS Seaways, Disneyland Paris and Norwegian Cruise Line.

A wave of success swept Portugal as the WTA, known as the ‘Oscars‘ of the tourism industry, announced the Algarve was awarded seven of the eight categories it was nominated for, including ‘Best European Beach destination’.

Christopher Frost, vice president of the WTA, told journalists these prizes were proof the Algarve is an “excellent market” and that tourists continued to visit the region, despite the ongoing crisis. According to weekly newspaper Expresso, this was especially true of luxury resort tourists, who have not felt the effects of the crisis as much.

The Vila Joya hotel in Albufeira conquered Europe’s ‘Leading Boutique Hotel‘ prize for the fourth consecutive year, and the Conrad Algarve, where the event took place, was recognised as Europe’s ‘Best New Resort.’ The Dunas Douradas Beach Club was distinguished as ‘Best Housing Complex‘ and the Martinhal Beach Resort & hotel was awarded ‘Best Villa Resort.’

Other award-wining hotels include the Ria Park Hotel & Spa, which won the ‘Best Conference Hotel‘ category, and the Sheraton Algarve Hotel and Pine Cliffs Resort which won the ‘Best Family Resort‘ award. The only hotel outside the Algarve distinguished by the WTA was Lisbon‘s Bairro Alto Hotel, considered the ‘Best Boutique Hotel.’

The winners of these legs go head-to-head at WTA’s Grand Final, which will be held at The Oberoi, Gurgaon, in New Delhi, India on 12 December.

Algarve set to host Portugal Masters in October 2012

The Algarve is preparing to welcome the golfing elite to Portugal next month as it hosts the seventh edition of the Portugal Masters competition at the Oceânico Victoria Golf Course in Vilamoura from 11th to 14th October 2012.

Former World Number One, Martin Kaymer, is excited to return to Portuguese soil, he said: ‘I'm really looking forward to playing in Portugal again this year. I think it is one of the best golf courses we play all year and I always look forward to going back. It has a good prize fund, a good field and is a very important part of my schedule.'

‘We can stay in the hotel on site and the course itself is excellent. I've finished seventh and eighth in the past and it's good to know that I still have the course record at 11 under par from five years ago.'

The 27 year old German missed out on the Portugal Masters in 2007 with England's Steve Webster taking the title. However, Kaymer shows key potential with ten European Tour titles, a first Major Championship in the 2010 US PGA Championship, a winning Ryder Cup debut for Europe in Wales the same year and his elevation to World Number One in early 2011.

England's Tom Lewis, last season's Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year, will also defend his title in the €2.25 million tournament, which will be an important factor in determining who will take ‘The Race to Dubai' crown at the end of the season.

At this time of year, the Algarve provides some of the best golfing conditions in Europe with mild temperatures and calm winds. The region is therefore a favourite for Britons looking to play overseas with its eclectic choice of championship standard golf courses.

Kaymer can't wait to get back to a venue and a tournament close to his heart. He added: ‘The field is strong, the crowds are usually great fun, the organisation is good and I always remember the Pro-Am being fun to play, so overall it is a very nice week... The whole combination of the hotel, the fans and the course means it is always a comfortable week and it helps me play well.'

For keen golfers hoping to catch some of the Portugal Masters action, the region is just a three hour flight direct from the UK into Faro. Over seven UK airlines including Monarch, BA, Jet2, BMI, Ryanair and Easyjet serve the Algarve from 26 regional airports making the region one of the most accessible European golf destinations.

Advance tickets for the Portugal Masters 2012 are available now with substantial savings. Admission to the Pro-Am on 10th October is €10, with Any One Day Adult passes costing €15 (€20 on the gate) and concessions €12 in advance or €15 on the gate. Adult Season tickets are priced at €45 (Wednesday to Sunday) compared to €55 on the gate. To buy tickets, log on to:
