Portugal is one of the best value travel destinations for 2014 according to Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet, the largest travel guide book publisher in the world, has choosen the best value travel destinations for 2014 and Portugal is one of them.

"Each year the British Post Office surveys the prices in European holiday resorts.

The most recent edition names Albufeira in the Algarve as the cheapest option for a summer family holidayThe Algarve in high summer may not be to everyone’s taste, but it shows that Portugal is great for the budget-conscious.

There are excellent deals elsewhere too. Lisbon has wonderful coffee and sweet treats for a few euros, and you can ride cheap trams around to your heart’s content.

Portugal is also, for Europeans, a superb place to surf without having to fork out the airfare to the sport’s traditional heartlands."

Works from the Prado Museum at the National Museum of Ancient Art

Lisbon's National Museum of Ancient Art is to exhibit around 60 Spanish works from the Prado Museum from November 29th.

The exhibition “Painting from the North in the Prado Museum” features works by Rubens, Breughel and Lorrain and is thanks to an agreement between the two institutions. It will be the first time that such a large number of Prado Museum works will be put on show in Portugal.

The agreement forms part of a series of initiatives between the two museums, apart from this exhibition, such as the loan of the triptych "Temptation of Saint Anthony", by the Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch, currently on display at the National Museum of Ancient Art. As an offset, the Portuguese museum will receive a self-portrait of Albrecht Dürer, one of the ex-libris in the Prado Museum collection which is rarely lent out.

In 2016, the Prado Museum will put on a large exhibition for the 500th anniversary commemoration of the death of Bosch, bringing together a large part of his works.

In the National Museum of Ancient Art, founded in 1884, is to be found the most relevant collection of non-modern art in the country, including a number of important artworks classified as National Treasures such as the St. Vincent Panels, the Monstrance of Belém or the Namban Screens.

SATA increases connections with the United States and Canada and offers new fare products

Starting with the IATA Winter Season, which begins at the end of October, SATA will increase its flights between the Azores and the United States and Canada, at which time there will be one more weekly rotation to Boston and Toronto.

The number of flights will be gradually increased until the months of July and August, when SATA will fly every day from Ponta Delgada to Boston, and six days a week from Ponta Delgada to Toronto.

Azores are "Preferred Destination" of European Travel Agents' and Tour Operators' Associations in 2014

Sete Cidades Trail_São Miguel Island©Turismo dos Açores|Veraçor
The Azores became officially the 2014 “Preferred Destination” of European Travel Agents’ and Tour Operators’ Associations (ECTAA), according to a protocol signed this week by representatives of the Government of the Azores and ECTAA’s representatives.
The distinction will bring added benefits to the Azores in the promotion of the archipelago as a quality tourist destination.
According to the protocol, the Azores will benefit from a series of actions intended to disseminate the information and promotional materials of our destination, such as the ECTAA site, newsletters, public presentations and other initiatives. In addition, the Azores will also have the opportunity to establish contacts with travel agents and tour operators that are part of this association as well as with all ECTAA members.
The Regional Secretary for Tourism of Azores, revealed that "ECTAA will organise in Ponta Delgada its biennial meeting" in June 2014, adding that the Azores "will not only participate in the event, but will also take part in its organisation by contributing with ideas and projects." Vítor Fraga also noted that "this protocol, in addition to bringing all benefits to the Autonomous Region of the Azores, supports our views regarding the promotion of the archipelago as a quality tourist destination."
In March this year, the Region became the "Preferred Destination" of the Portuguese Association of Travel Agencies and Tourism (APAVT), a distinction that is now reinforced with the agreement signed with ECTAA, which enhances the projection of the Azores Destination at a European level.

Established in 19661, ECTAA stands for the “Group of National Travel Agents’ and Tour Operators’ Associations within the EU.” An international non-profit association under Belgian law, whose offices are located in Brussels, Belgium, ECTAA represents the national associations of travel agents and tour operators of the 15 Member States of the European Union.

Following a succession of recent brand introductions in the Iberian Peninsula, Hilton Worldwide announced the arrival of DoubleTree by Hilton brand in Portugal with the  Lisbon's Fontana Park Hotel as Hilton's first hotel in the Portuguese capital.

In Portugal itself, the Lisbon property will join Conrad Algarve, which opened in autumn 2012, near to the existing Hilton Vilamoura as Cascatas Golf Resort and Spa, while Hilton Bom Sucesso Obidos Resort opens next winter.

Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president of development, Europe & Africa, Hilton Worldwide, said, "This is a major coup. Not only are we bringing one of Europe's hottest hotel brands to Portugal for the first time, we are doing so in the capital city, while also demonstrating the strength of our portfolio with this becoming our third brand in the country."

Fontana Park Hotel first opened in 2008 and its impressive design quickly won plaudits, including 'Best Interior Design' at the European Hotel Design Awards. The hotel has 139 rooms, nine meeting rooms, two restaurants and a bar.

TAP to launch Manaus and Belem as new destinations in Brazil

The company extends its reach to 12 Brazilian gateways in 2014.

TAP Portugal announced the start of operations to Manaus and Belem, both cities in Northern Brazil, as of the beginning of June 2014. With the addition of these new destinations to its network, the company increases to 12 the number of gateways operated in Brazil and further strengthens its positioning as the world’s leading airline in operation to that key market in South America.

The operation is to be launched with three weekly frequencies – on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays – and flights will operate the route Lisbon – Manaus – Belem – Lisbon, thereby allowing TAP to enter for the first time into Northern Brazil, a region with great potential for tourism and where the offer of international flights is still very scarce.

Out of Portugal, flights will depart TAP Lisbon hub at 09h30 and arrive in Manaus at 13h40. After one hour turn-round time flights go on to Belem arriving there at 17h40. At 19h10 return flights depart Belem with arrival in Lisbon at 06h45 (following day).

The introduction of these new services will not only allow TAP to access and fly direct traffic between North Brazil and Europe, but also to increase the seat availability in other TAP operated routes in Brazil, which nowadays and due to the company’s high load-factors can hardly meet the increasing demand.

Currently, neither Manaus nor Belem have direct flights to Europe in operation. Thus, the launch of TAP direct flights to those cities, that are the gateway into North Brazil, represent quite a significant step forward. From June 2014 onwards, customers will be provided with the most convenient and fastest connections to Lisbon and many other destinations beyond across the company’s European network.

Currently, TAP operates direct flights to 10 gateways in Brazil: Fortaleza; Natal; Recife; Salvador; Brasilia; Belo Horizonte; Rio de Janeiro; Sao Paulo; Campinas and Porto Alegre, adding in the whole to 74 weekly frequencies operated in average. With the introduction of Manaus and Belem as new destinations, TAP will from now on cover all regions in the country, considerably reinforcing the reach of its network in Brazil.
