The Algarve secures Best Value Golf hat-trick in TG poll

The Algarve, Europe’s leading golf destination, is celebrating after being awarded the prestigious title of ‘Best Value Golf Destination’ in the 2015 Today’s Golfer Travel Awards.

The award, which is voted for by the readers of Today’s Golfer magazine, returns to the Algarve for the third time in four years, following previous wins in 2012 and 2013.

The picturesque region, which contains 41 courses and provides more than a million rounds to overseas golf visitors each year, saw off competition from across Europe to scoop the accolade.

A spokesperson for ATA said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been recognised once again as Europe’s best value golf destination, particularly as the Today’s Golfer awards are voted for exclusively by golfers.

“To win the ‘Best Value’ prize also really demonstrates how highly UK golfers rate the Algarve – not only for the quality of our destination but for the great value they get whenever they visit.

“In 2015 visiting UK golfers will receive even greater value as the British Pound has strengthened almost 10% against the Euro in the past 12 months so budgets will go that bit further.

“To win three times out of the last four years is particularly pleasing and we’ll be striving to ensure that we retain the trophy next year.”

Kevin Brown, travel editor at Today’s Golfer, said: “The annual TG Travel Awards – the ‘Oscars of the golf travel industry’ – have proved a huge hit since being introduced in 2011.
“They are awards which provide a totally objective view of the best hotels, courses and regions, because it is the paying public, our readers, who decide where the titles go.

“The Algarve is a deserving winner of the ‘Best Value Golf Destination’, as reflected by the overwhelming number of people who voted for the region. Winning three years out of four is a great record, and one the Algarve should be justly proud of.”

Google maps the interiors of the Palaces of Sintra

Palacio Nacional da Pena © Serge Michaux
In partnership with Parques de Sintra, Google has recently made some additions to its Google Maps collection by adding the Palaces of Pena, Sintra, Queluz and Monserrate to its Indoor Maps function and thus making it possible for any Google Maps (whether via computer or mobile device - Android and IOS) user to access the layouts of each of these palaces across their respective different floors. To this end, simply search for the respective palace, zoom in and click your way through (you may switch between the different levels by clicking on the buttons above and below the zoom).

Currently, Google Indoor Maps covers some three billion square metres of interiors spread across over twenty countries with Portugal now including a total of 49 sites featuring everything from train and metro stations through to museums and other sites of culture and leisure.

The palaces of Pena, Sintra, Queluz and Monserrate are the very first such Portuguese monuments to make it onto Google Indoor Maps and, from the Parques de Sintra perspective, this represents yet another means of raising the profile of the heritage under its management to the largest possible audience worldwide.

Reguengos de Monsaraz selected as the European City of Wine 2015

Reguengos de Monsaraz is the wine region selected to be 2015 European Wine City.
Throughout next year the municipality in the Alentejo province of Portugal will organize a series of activities, connected to its wine culture. Some of the scheduled initiatives include a congress on vineyards and wine, and various cultural visits.
The European Network of Wine Cities (RECEVIN) met in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, and selected Reguengos de Monsaraz as the 2015 European Wine City. Portugal was the selected destination to host the initiatives in which three wine regions had applied, namely Reguengos de Monsaraz, Bairrada (Municipality of Cantanhede) and Vinhos Verdes Alvarinho (Municipalities of Monção and Melgaço).
The European Wine City initiative is a partnership between the Association of Portuguese Wine Municipalities (AMPV) and the RECEVIN, with the intent to “promote the wines and the regions.”
The contest aims to annually distinguish a city that symbolizes European wine development. The contest operates on a rotating basis amongst the countries who make up the European network. In Portugal, Palmela had this distinction in 2012.
Reguengos de Monsaraz will host an award ceremony in February, 2015.
