Manufacture of Cowbells Classified by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Manufacture of Cowbells has been awarded the title of World Heritage at the 10th meeting of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage, taking place in Windhoek in Namibia.

The application was presented by the Alentejo/Ribatejo Tourism Board in partnership with the Municipal Council of Viana do Alentejo and the Parish Council of Alcáçovas.

The Manufacture of Cowbells is a unique craft that has existed in the Alentejo region for over two thousand years, and is most widespread in the municipalities of Estremoz, Reguengos de Monsaraz and Viana do Alentejo, specifically in the civil parish of Alcáçovas.

With the inclusion of the Manufacture of Cowbells on UNESCO’s List of Cultural and Intangible Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding, it is hoped that this skill and ancient craft will be sustained and passed on.
