20th Anniversary of Expo'98: From May 25th to June 2nd
The 20th anniversary of Expo98 will be celebrated with multimedia show under the Canopy of the Portugal Pavilion, at Parque das Nações.
Alongside the multimedia show from 25 May to 2 June, the olharapos will be present at 21.30 and 22.30 to entertain spectators before the first show and during breaks between sessions.
As in 1998, we will also be paying tribute to water in a performance embellished with fountains and a water screen, 30 metres long and 10 metres high, onto which videos and images will be projected that will recall the highlights of the Lisbon World Exhibition.
This is a show with three moments, narrated by Eduardo Rêgo: first, it will recall the reconstruction of this area of eastern Lisbon, then it will celebrate the 1998 exhibition and then it will reflect on Parque das Nações today.
Finally, it will reaffirm the belief that Expo'98 affected how the world began to see Lisbon. It could even be considered the most daring project of the twentieth century, with its unprecedented urban rehabilitation plan – from nothing, an international case study emerged from a truly degraded area.
The largest aquarium in the world and a modern transport hub were built, as well as a new crossing over the Tagus that is one of the greatest engineering works in the country.
For four months, the flags of 146 nations were symbols of a universality witnessed by more than 11 million visitors.

Arco Lisboa 2017
When ARCO, a major international contemporary art fair, decided to stage the event outside its country of origin for the first time, it chose Portugal as its venue. Yet another indication that "choosing" is indeed an art!
In 2017, the Madrid contemporary art fair outside Spain will be staged in Lisbon. The event, at which 40 international galleries will be exhibiting, will be taking place at the Cordoaria Nacional from the 18th to the 21th of May.
This will be a unique opportunity for those who enjoy contemporary art, and will also be a good excuse to get to know Lisbon. Known as the city of light, Lisbon's special luminosity and welcoming ambience mean it is greatly appreciated by artists, photographers and film producers.
If you enjoy contemporary art, you will definitely like Lisbon. It is a centuries-old city with historical neighbourhoods that you simply must visit and where the recent works of architecture give you a new perspective of the space.
In Belém, the neighbourhood filled with memories of the voyages of the Portuguese Discoveries in the 16th century, close to the iconic monuments of the Torre de Belém (Belém Tower) and the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (Jerónimos Monastery), you must be sure to visit the Belém Cultural Centre, which houses the Berardo Museum. This collection of contemporary art features exhibits representing the most important artistic movements from the 20th century through to the present day. You can admire works by Duchamp, Piet Mondrian, Andy Warhol, Bruce Nauman and Cindy Sherman, to name but a few. This is also the neighbourhood where the Museu dos Coches (National Coach Museum) is located. This unique collection is now housed in a modern building designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect, Paulo Mendes da Rocha.
In the city centre, between the Chiado, the Bairro Alto and São Bento, you will find the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea (National Contemporary Art Museum) and the Júlio Pomar Atelier-Museum, alongside many art galleries and antique shops. Nearby, in the Amoreiras neighbourhood, a now-renovated former silk factory building houses the surprising collection belonging to the foundation set up by Arpad Szenes-Vieira da Silva, a notable 20th-century Portuguese artist.
To the north of the city now, in the Avenidas Novas neighbourhood, you will find the Gulbenkian Foundation. This noteworthy 1950s building stands in a large garden where the principles of modern architecture are clearly in evidence. The main building features auditoriums and offers a programme dedicated to classical and contemporary music. It is also where you will find the museum housing the collection of Armenian millionaire Calouste Gulbenkian, who so adored Lisbon that he made it his home. At one end of the garden is the Centro de Arte Moderna (Modern Art Centre). Ten minutes' walk away, Culturgest is a space where the most recent trends in the plastic arts are given pride of place.
Anyone choosing to stay in nearby Cascais will have the opportunity to visit the Paula Rego collection. Paula Rego is another Portuguese artist who has made a significant contribution to the history of art. She currently lives in England. The uniquely-shaped building called "Casa das Histórias" ("House of Stories") was designed by another Pritzker-Prize-winning architect, Eduardo de Souto Moura.
But just as importantly, you should be sure to simply spend some time strolling around the streets of the city, admiring the tiled façades and the various works of urban art created by designers and graffiti artists; for Lisbon is a veritable open-air museum where a surprise awaits around every corner.

In Porto, don’t miss the exhibition ‘Joan Miró: Materiality and Metamorphosis’ at Casa de Serralves
Don’t miss the exhibition ‘Joan Miró: Materiality and Metamorphosis’ at Casa de Serralves (Porto), that presents to the public for the first time the works acquired by the Portuguese State untill the 28th of January 2017.
The exhibition covers a six-decade period in Joan Mirós's career - from 1924 to 1981. It focuses in particular on the transformation of pictorial languages that the Catalan artist first developed in the mid-1920s. The exhibition considers his artistic metamorphoses across the mediums of drawing, painting, collage and work in tapestry.
Miró’s visual thinking and the ways in which he negotiates between optical and tactile modes of sensation is examined in detail, as are the artist’s working processes.
The exhibition comprises around 80 works by Joan Miró from the collection of 85 works, most of which have never previously been seen by the general public, including six of his paintings on masonite produced in 1936 and six "sobreteixims" (tapestries) of 1973. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue with a lead essay by the curator.
This important exhibition is curated by Robert Lubar Messeri, a leading world expert in Miró's work. Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira will be responsible for the exhibition’s architectural design.

Monument to the Discoveries: Exhibition "Architects Are Poets Too" | Cottinelli Telmo 1897-1948
Don´t miss the exhibition "Architects Are Poets Too" in the Monument to the Discoveries, in Belém quarter, Lisbon, until April 6th.
So said Cottinelli Telmo, the creator of the Monument
to the Discoveries, insisting that architects should have the right and freedom
to assert their subjectivity, elude rationality and circumvent material
constraints. His words also sum up the way in which he saw architecture: in
communion with all arts and disciplines.
An exceptional creator and a man of many talents,
Cottinelli was an unusual combination of intuition and intelligence, culture
and sensitivity. A virtuoso draughtsman with an effervescent sense of humour,
his enthusiasm was contagious. He was constantly alive to his surroundings,
always on the lookout for new experiences and driven by a boundless curiosity.
His personality was complex and full of nuances, eschewing a linear path. The
same was true of his career, which was punctuated by frequent successes, but
also by doubts and hesitation.
With the help of the archives and collections of
various public institutions, this exhibition brings together rarely-seen pieces
and unpublished material in order to paint a picture of Cottinelli Telmo
immersed in his creative process, giving body to his ideas and form to the
conjuring of his unstoppable imagination.
Biography
A Creative Life
José Ângelo Cottinelli Telmo (Lisbon, 1897–Cascais,
1948) is a unique figure in 20th century Portuguese culture. His creations
continue to influence the country’s imaginative life to this day. In the early
20th century, Lisbon’s cultural scene was small and insular, but it was eager
for novelties and change. New media such as the press, film and exhibitions
were a source of fascination for young creative people. Cottinelli soon set out
to test every new format, and in all of them he became one of the major
proponents among the generation that lived through that effervescent period.
As an architect he worked for the Companhia dos
Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses (CP, the national rail company) and was a member
of state departments, but he also ran his own private studio. He tried his hand
at ballet, musical composition, photography and art criticism, and also worked
as a journalist and editor. He played a stand-out role in the history of comic
book art and film in Portugal. His creations were pioneering and acted as
models, opening up the way for others to follow, and instrumental in making
these disciplines accessible to the public.
As Cottinelli’s creative work evolved, some compromises
certainly had to be made due to the conservative forces that dominated the
country. However, he never lost his sense of alertness and lucidity, which led
him to oppose the most reactionary, academically retrograde and
backward-looking attitudes.
When we think of Cottinelli, we see the image of
someone constantly committed to inspiring the creative types whom he gathered
together and mentored. And yet, in spite of all this, he also experienced
loneliness due the smallness of the artistic world at the time.

Joana Vasconcelos exhibition at Palacio Nacional da Ajuda
![]() |
The dialogue between the artist's works and the unique interiors of the Palace promises to transform this key event into the most important contemporary art exhibit in Portugal.
The exhibition is held in the Palace's royal apartments and features the last decade of work by Joana Vasconcelos, bringing together iconic works such as "A Noiva", "Coração Independente" and "Marilyn", alongside more recent works not previously shown in Portugal, such as Lilicoptère, Perruque and War Games.
Last year, Joana Vasconcelos became the first woman and the youngest artist to exhibit at the Palace of Versailles, an exhibition visited by 1,679,000 people, making it the most visited exhibition in Paris in the last 50 years.
In Lisboa, Ajuda National Palace is no doubt the best setting to host this show. This magnificent work of Portuguese architecture, built in the first half of the 19th century, was the official residence of the Portuguese monarchy until the establishment of the Republic. In 1968 it opened to the public as a museum and is one of the most important Portuguese museums of decorative arts. The Palace still retains the royal chambers, beautifully restored to its original condition of the era.

Joana Vasconcelos will exhibit in Versailles: June - September 2012
From 19 June to 30 September 2012, the Palace of Versailles presents the exhibition Joana Vasconcelos Versailles in the State Apartments and the gardens.
Some of the works that will be included in the exhibition are, "Marilyn" ( two shoes with stiletto heels, made of stainless steel pans, lids and cement), Gabriel staircase by Mary Poppins (a vast tentacular body made from an original mix of textiles and pre-existing objects, an assembly of industrial textures and hand-sewn fabrics) and The Red and Black Independent Hearts (that reproduce the Viana heart – an emblematic theme of Portuguese jewellery - and offer two monumental versions of it: one black, the other red, colours that symbolise death and passion, war and peace) .
