Wallpeople 2013 Music Edition: Saturday June 1st

Wallpeople is an international project of collaborative art, born in Barcelona. The initiative tries to promote the creativity of people by inviting everyone to be part of collective exhibitions in urban spaces.

One of the basic reasons of Wallpeople is to return art to the streets and reclaim public space as a way of expression and citizen interaction.

Our events are an opportunity for all those who have something to show to the world and cannot do it in a gallery or museum. We use all the Internet tools to call attendees and create real-life experiences.

Wallpeople started in 2009 as an experiment that has grown year after year, reaching more than forty cities across the world. Behind the project, we can find Pablo Quijano and David Marcos, two advertising creatives who decided to support free art and leave aside commercial communication. Each edition has a different subject and this year it is the turn of... music.

Wallpeople 2013: Music Edition

Wallpeople 2013: Music Edition Promo from Wallpeople on Vimeo.

Music is a universal language. It moves us, changes our mood and gives colour to our lives. Music is magic, Music is ART. And we cannot imagine a world without it.

One of the most special things about music is that has no boundaries and is present in all cultures. It can have influence on and merge with any form of art or expression. Therefore, music will star in the Wallpeople 2013 edition. We want everyone to express his unique relationship with music, regardless of genre or style. We propose two possibilities:

1. Reinterpret a song in an artistic format of your choice: illustration, photography, text, painting, collage, canvas…

2. Create any work related to music in a general way: For example: a tribute to an artist, a concert, a musical moment of your life, your favourite style, musical origins…

Next June 1st, thousands of people will star in outdoors exhibitions across the world with their works, where they could show and study their creations. The streets will fill up with personal and authentic works with a common source of inspiration: music.

The event will be on Saturday June 1st, all over the world and in Portugal three cities will participate: LisboaPorto and Funchal

Azores distinguished once again as best "green" tourist destination in Europe

The archipelago of the Azores was once again considered as the best "green" tourist destination in Europe (QualityCoast GOLD).

As in 2012, the prize was awarded at an official ceremony that took place in Malta on Monday, the European Maritime Day.

The "QualityCoast" annual awards are delivered by the "European Coastal & Marine Union" (EUCC), following the evaluation of the sustainability of more than 1000 European destinations.

These destinations were evaluated by an international team that used more than 100 indicators comprising all aspects of sustainability, including nature, environment, local identity and culture, tourism and business, local community and security.

The Azores have led the top list of green tourism since May 2012.

The organisation of the "QualityCoast" awards stresses that the Azores have drawn advantage from their traditional production sectors, such as wine, cheese, fruit, tea and tuna. In addition, the Region has managed to overcome the economic disadvantages caused by the international ban on commercial whaling with the promotion of whale watching.

One should recall that the "QualityCoast" award, supported by the European Commission, is the largest international independent certification programme for sustainable tourism destinations.

Since 2007, more than 140 destinations in 23 countries, including coastal towns, tourist resorts and islands, have been selected for a "QualityCoast" award.

The "QualityCoast" awards acknowledge the efforts undertaken by destinations to preserve and develop tourism, not only in the visible aspects that are assessed, such as natural heritage, but also in the policies and management plans that take into account the principles for sustainable development.

The Portuguese town of Cascais was also one of the winners of the QualityCoast Silver, and all municipalities of the Portuguese West region (including Peniche, Torres Vedras, Obidos, Nazaré) received QualityCoast Bronze.

Joana Vasconcelos exhibition at Palacio Nacional da Ajuda

The name of Joana Vasconcelos needs no introductions and her work speaks for itself on the international contemporary art scene. After her success at Versailles, Joana Vasconcelos returns to Lisboa to present her most ambitious exhibition to date in the magnificent halls of Ajuda National Palace.

The dialogue between the artist's works and the unique interiors of the Palace promises to transform this key event into the most important contemporary art exhibit in Portugal.

The exhibition is held in the Palace's royal apartments and features the last decade of work by Joana Vasconcelos, bringing together iconic works such as "A Noiva", "Coração Independente" and "Marilyn", alongside more recent works not previously shown in Portugal, such as Lilicoptère, Perruque and War Games.

Last year, Joana Vasconcelos became the first woman and the youngest artist to exhibit at the Palace of Versailles, an exhibition visited by 1,679,000 people, making it the most visited exhibition in Paris in the last 50 years.

In Lisboa, Ajuda National Palace is no doubt the best setting to host this show. This magnificent work of Portuguese architecture, built in the first half of the 19th century, was the official residence of the Portuguese monarchy until the establishment of the Republic. In 1968 it opened to the public as a museum and is one of the most important Portuguese museums of decorative arts. The Palace still retains the royal chambers, beautifully restored to its original condition of the era.

Until 25 August, Thursday through Sunday, from 10am to 7pm, Saturdays until 9pm, at Palacio Nacional da Ajuda, Largo da Ajuda.
Normal ticket 10 euros, family ticket from 20 to 24 euros.
Free admission for children up to 6 years old.
Closed on Wednesdays
