Portugal is one of the best value travel destinations for 2014 according to Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet, the largest travel guide book publisher in the world, has choosen the best value travel destinations for 2014 and Portugal is one of them.

"Each year the British Post Office surveys the prices in European holiday resorts.

The most recent edition names Albufeira in the Algarve as the cheapest option for a summer family holidayThe Algarve in high summer may not be to everyone’s taste, but it shows that Portugal is great for the budget-conscious.

There are excellent deals elsewhere too. Lisbon has wonderful coffee and sweet treats for a few euros, and you can ride cheap trams around to your heart’s content.

Portugal is also, for Europeans, a superb place to surf without having to fork out the airfare to the sport’s traditional heartlands."

Works from the Prado Museum at the National Museum of Ancient Art

Lisbon's National Museum of Ancient Art is to exhibit around 60 Spanish works from the Prado Museum from November 29th.

The exhibition “Painting from the North in the Prado Museum” features works by Rubens, Breughel and Lorrain and is thanks to an agreement between the two institutions. It will be the first time that such a large number of Prado Museum works will be put on show in Portugal.

The agreement forms part of a series of initiatives between the two museums, apart from this exhibition, such as the loan of the triptych "Temptation of Saint Anthony", by the Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch, currently on display at the National Museum of Ancient Art. As an offset, the Portuguese museum will receive a self-portrait of Albrecht Dürer, one of the ex-libris in the Prado Museum collection which is rarely lent out.

In 2016, the Prado Museum will put on a large exhibition for the 500th anniversary commemoration of the death of Bosch, bringing together a large part of his works.

In the National Museum of Ancient Art, founded in 1884, is to be found the most relevant collection of non-modern art in the country, including a number of important artworks classified as National Treasures such as the St. Vincent Panels, the Monstrance of Belém or the Namban Screens.
