Portuguese airline completes series of new route launches to North America this year:
- First direct TAP flight between Lisbon and Washington-Dulles is in the air- Five flights a week between Lisbon and Washington
- Fourfold in 16 of crease in the number of North American destinations served
Last 16th of June 2019, TAP flight TP231 left Lisbon, launching the direct service between the Portuguese capital and Washington DC. This is the last of three American destinations the Portuguese airline has launched this summer.
The new direct route between Portugal and Washington-Dulles consolidates the airline’s commitment to the North American market and enhances the growth it has recorded so far.
Flights between Lisbon and Washington DC, will operate five times a week, leaving Lisbon at 16:30 and arriving at Dulles at 19:40 local time. The flights then leave Washington at 22:40, arriving in the Portuguese capital at 10:50 the next day.
On 1 June, TAP launched its service to Chicago, then on 10 June – Portugal Day – it began operating flights between the Portuguese capital and San Francisco. The launch of these three new routes to the USA was completed on June 16 with the inaugural flight between Lisbon and Washington DC.
The airline will launch flights to another five new destinations this summer: to Conakry and Banjul from Lisbon, and to Brussels, Lyon and Munich from Porto. With these new routes, the TAP network will grow to 91 cities in 37 countries.

The new route confirms our commitment to the Portuguese market and will provide passengers travelling from Lisbon access to Qatar Airways’ extensive global route network of more than 160 destinations around the world.”
The new daily direct services to Lisbon will be operated by the airline’s state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliner, with 22 seats in Business Class and 232 seats in Economy Class. It will be operated seven times weekly services in summer 2019 and five times weekly service in winter 2019/2020.
The service opens up a world of connectivity for Qatar Airways customers travelling from Lisbon to destinations across Africa, Asia and Australia, such as Maputo, Hong Kong, Bali, Maldives, Bangkok, Sydney and many more.
Lisbon has also joined Qatar Airways’ air freight network, with the carrier’s cargo arm offering a total capacity of 70 tonnes to and from Portugal each week, and a direct connection to destinations in Europe, the Middle East and the Americas via Doha.
Qatar Airways currently operates a modern fleet of more than 250 aircraft via its hub, Hamad International Airport (HIA) to more than 160 destinations worldwide.
The 26th edition of the European World Travel Awards for 2019 was held in Madeira, at Belmond Reid's Palace, last 8th of June 2019, and Portugal won 27 European awards, plus 15 in the country category/Portugal, making a total of 42 awards.
Portugal was rated “Europe’s Leading Destination” and Lisbon“Europe’s Leading City Break Destination” for the third year in a row. Lisbon was also considered “Europe’s Leading Cruise Port” for the fourth time in a row. For the sixth time the Algarve was chosen as the “Leading Beach Destination”, an award it has already won in 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017, such as Madeira that was chosen as the “Europe’s Leading Island destination”, an award it has already won in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018. To these distinctions, we can add that of the Institute of Tourism of Portugal, deemed to be “Europe’s Leading Tourist Board". It should be noted that in 2019 Portugal was represented with more than 140 nominations, in 70 different categories.

The Regatta of Portugal is back for another edition and will transform the Tagus into a great spectacle aboard the fast and agile trimarans Diam 24, the iconic boats of the "Tour de France à la Voile" competition.
National and international sailors will compete daily from 5:00 p.m., ending at sunset, always accompanied by good music and lots of animation, from the floating stage. Get ready because the party won't stop.
