Eurowings will connect Porto to Munich from April 2017

The company Eurowings, which belongs to the German group Lufthansa, will start operating between Porto and Munich after inaugurating the flights to Düsseldorf.
Flights can be booked on the company's official website from April 2017.
Lufthansa, which for several years has been providing an authentic airlift between Porto and its main hub (Frankfurt), started this year the Porto-Munich route, for the first time, along with the offer of the parent company, there are also low-cost flights. Following an ongoing restructuring, Germanwings was rebranded to Eurowings, an airline which also belonged to the German group.
Porto, which recently received the news that Air France and KLM, French and Dutch companies, would fly from Porto to Paris (Charles de Gaulle) and Amsterdam, respectively, will now be served by one more company with flights to one of the most important airports in Central Europe.

New Year in Madeira

If there’s a place to come and celebrate life, then that place is Madeira. As each year draws to a close, the end is commemorated of yet another cycle of 365 days that have been lived as intensely as our memory allows us to recall.

The Christian traditions of Christmas time combine with the displays of rejoicing at the arrival of the New Year, in a rich and extensive programme of cultural, ethnographic and artistic events that continue throughout the month of December and carry on till Twelfth Night.

The specific conditions of Funchal’s naturally-formed amphitheatre transform it into a giant crib lit by the thousands of lights placed up and down the city’s main avenues, resulting in a most extraordinary scenario. Allow yourself to be tempted by the wares in the shops of Funchal and give yourself up to the frenzied activity of shopping. Here you can buy anything from the latest international brands to the most diverse handicraft articles. Funchal is like a giant outdoor shopping centre.

An island in festival, both at the hotels and in the restaurants, bars and streets, where, in order to mark the transition to the New Year, the skies of Funchal are lit up with a gigantic firework display that lasts for a good ten minutes. This is undoubtedly the dawning of a whole new life!

Madeira Christmas and End of the Year Festivities

The arrival of the decorative lights in the streets of the city centre of Funchal, during the month of December, sets the beginning of the Madeira Christmas and End of the Year Festivities programme.

These festivities culminate with the famous fireworks show, officially recognised in 2006 by the Guinness Book of Records, as the largest fireworks show in the world.

These commemorations consist of a rich and extensive programme of cultural, religious, ethnographic and artistic manifestations that take place throughout the entire month of December, an event that culminates on January,8th.

Find out more about what to expect from Christmas and New Year Festivities in Madeira

December 23rd
Market Night is held on December 23rd, when Madeirans do their last-minute Christmas shopping and it is in this hustle and bustle that the spirit of the “Festivity” can best be felt, the nickname given by the Madeirans to identify Christmas. The inhabitants move towards the Farmers' Market where the surrounding streets, which are closed to traffic, are occupied by various points of sale opened throughout the night. They have varied local products such as flowers, shrubs, fruits, vegetables, sweets, wine-and-garlic meat sandwiches and typical drinks, such as poncha.
At nightfall the biggest attraction of the day begins, a traditional Christmas carols show, where locals take on the role of true artists. Also the participation of music bands and folklore groups helps to maintain the atmosphere of celebration and fun until dawn.
December 28th
Organised by the Madeira Athletics Association, the Funchal Road Race is one of the oldest sports events of its kind in Portugal and Europe. This race that has attracted innumerable national and international athletes to the island, brings lots of adrenaline and excitement to the Madeiran capital.
December 31st
The fireworks show lasts for about eight minutes and is distributed by several fireworks stations in the Funchal amphitheatre, the waterfront, the city centre, the sea and one station on Porto Santo Island.
This grand spectacle that is one of Madeira’s most important tourist events, was internationally recognised in 2006 by the Guinness Book of Records as "The largest fireworks show in the World".
January 5th
On the evening of January 5th to 6th the Twelfth Night songs are sung in the neighbours’ houses, a little throughout the region. It is this spirit that seeks to recreate the popular tradition of the Madeiran traditional songs that were made on this day, door to door, in various localities of the ARM, which the Association of the Casas do Povo of the Autonomous Region of Madeira organises and produces in the Auditorium of the Municipal Garden of Funchal, the musical show “Cantar os Reis” ( The Twelfh nights songs).
Other initiatives included in the programme:

Childbirth Masses
Christmas begins with the "Missas do Parto" (childbirth masses) starting December 16th and ending on Christmas Eve, with the midnight mass. The "Missas do Parto" - the novenas - are nine in total and are celebrate early in the morning. After the mass, believers gather in the churchyard to hear the chanting, accompanied by groups of strings, accordions and castanets, with no shortage of the “despiques”, which are followed by the snack with spirits, liqueurs and cakes.

In some parishes of Madeira such as Câmara de Lobos and Camacha, the tradition of philharmonic bands is maintained, accompanied by other instruments, such as castanets, bass drums, braguinhas or accordions, of going door to door, in a joyful symphony, to awaken its locals and rush them to this typical ritual of our land.

Christmas in Porto

In Porto, Christmas is a very special time. From the religious and pagan traditions, to the gastronomy, this is a good time to discover the essence of the city and the region.

The celebrations begin in early December, with the ritual of preparing our homes for the christmas time. To put up the Christmas tree, decorating it with colourful baubles and tinsels, putting christmas decorations throughout the house, are activities that bring the family together and start the season’s excesses.

... the gastronomic side of Christmas
In Porto, salt cod fills the tables in Christmas time, with lots of olive oil and accompanied with many vegetables. You can find other salt cod dishes, such as bolinhos de bacalhau (salt cod croquettes) or bacalhau com grelos (salt cod with greens). In some tables there are also filled with some octopus dishes: octopus rice, octopus croquettes or even boiled octopus.

As for sweets, the table will not lack in rabanadas (french toasts), mexidos, bolo-rei, sonhos (puffs), filhós (fritters), arroz-doce (rice pudding) and aletria. There are also those who delight in doces de bolina, fruit salad and nuts. The menu will be full of  puddings, leite-creme (custard), assorted cheeses, Port wine glasses or warm sweet wine, drink that warms the whole family through the night.

Parques de Sintra wins the World Travel Award for the fourth consecutive year as “World’s Leading Conservation Company”

Last 2nd of December 2016, Parques de Sintra won, for the fourth year in a row, the World Travel Award for the “World’s Leading Conservation Company”.
The Portuguese company received the award at the official ceremony held in the Maldives after having once again been the only European nominee in this category but facing such strong competition from around the rest of the world.
Considered internationally as the “Oscars of tourism”, the World Travel Awards were first launched in 1993 with the objective of recognising, acknowledging and celebrating excellence across every sector of the tourism industry. These awards certainly represent one of the most important distinctions that tourism sector companies might ever receive and a globally recognised and branded seal of quality. Both the general public and tourism sector professionals are eligible to vote.
The fourth World Travel Award for Parques de Sintra joins those already picked up by the company in recognition of the quality of the work carried out in restoring and enhancing the parks and monuments encharged to its care.
On hand to accept the award in the Maldives was the Parques de Sintra Director, José Lino Ramos, who declared that “winning such a prestigious award for the fourth consecutive year serves to revalidate the international recognition of the merit of the work undertaken by Parques de Sintra in recent years, especially in terms of the conservation and restoration of the parks and monuments under its management”.
Parques de Sintra is a publicly owned company that receives no financing from either the state or its shareholders and that maintains and opens to the benefit of the public the sites under its management only through recourse to the revenues generated (ticket, cafeteria and store sales and the leasing of venues). In 2016, Parques de Sintra expects to welcome over two and a half million visitors.

Christmas in Sintra

In this holiday season, the National Palace of Sintra will become a Christmas factory.

From December 16th through the 23rd , the facade of the palace will be the screen of the video mapping show "The Incredible Christmas Factory".

The toys, and how they are made, are the lead stars of the show, and the facade of National Palace of Sintra is the stage, in a project created by the OCUBO studio - the authors of the "Circo de Luz" and "Fabuloso Desejo de Natal", shows that took place in Terreiro do Paço, in Lisbon, in other holiday seasons.

According to the organization, the oldest Portuguese Royal Palace wants to become the background of a Christmas factory, in Lapland, where "virtual characters interact with the facade of the Palace" and "traditional toys are in the spotlight".

Wooden trains, dancers, robots and dolls are the focal point in a 15-minute show that takes place every hour from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.

2017: Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Fátima

In 2017, the 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fátima will be celebrated with a wide-ranging programme, the high point of which will be the presence of His Holiness Pope Francis on 13th May.

The first apparitions of Our Lady were to the shepherd children on 13th May 1917 and they were repeated the following months, the last occurring on 13th October the same year, when a remarkable crowd witnessed the "Miracle of the Sun". These are the dates that attract the greatest number of the faithful to the Sanctuary every year to take part in the Candlelight Procession on the night of 12th May and the Farewell Procession on the morning of 13th May, but every day, especially on the 13th of each month, many pilgrims arrive in Fátima, who visit this holy place to express their faith.

Apart from the regular pilgrimages and the religious celebrations, the 100th anniversary will be celebrated until 13th October 2017 with a wide-ranging cultural programme including a number of exhibitions, concerts of sacred music, performances relating to the apparitions, conferences, summer courses and the International Congress “Thinking Fátima”, which will be held in June.

What about some Christmas Shopping In Portugal?

Do you already have your Christmas list for family and friends? The Christmas season is great for a mini holiday in Lisbon or Porto as it is not very cold and there are still some sunny days. This is great for going for a walk in the city and starting to do your Christmas shopping.

The streets are filled with lights and the decoration changes over the weeks with stars, balls of different colours, Christmas trees, and other decorations and traditional nativity scenes.
The fact that it gets dark earlier, as we are already in winter time, is a good reason to get to know a livelier city. And the historic centres are places of excellence to find the last trends in fashion and great ideas for Christmas presents.

Make the most of the promotions from airlines and hotel Christmas programmes which always have special offers during this season.
Unique Chistmas presents for all
We suggest Portuguese souvenirs which can be found in the usual shopping areas: quality clothing, shoe brands that can be found around the world, bags and accessories made of cork (the latest trend) or articles made from pure wool from the centre of Portugal, in sackcloth. And you can of course choose the small Christmas markets, fairs and sales where you can always find a unique gift for everybody.
Portuguese cuisine also has products of excellence which are a great source of inspiration for Christmas presents: wines, olive oils, preserves (traditional industries that currently have gourmet specialties), sweets, jam or dried fruit. And during this season, traditional sweets are a temptation! You must try the Bolo-rei (King's Cake), "sonhos" (traditional deep fried sweet soft pastry normally eaten at Christmas), "rabanadas" (type of French toast) and "filhós" (traditional deep fried sweet pastry sprinkled with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon).
While shopping, roast chestnut venders on the streets are always a good excuse to take a break and try this seasonal delicacy.

And why not give a trip for the New Year in Portugal?
Happy Shopping and Merry Christmas!

With so many trips on offer and at such reasonable prices you're sure to find something appealing. What are you waiting for? Book your flight and in about two hours you could be landing in Portugal for a well-deserved break –
Lisbon, Porto, Faro, the Azores or Madeira could be the start of your explorations...
At this time of year, the entire country comes to life with Christmas entertainment, starting with the lights that bring sparkle and colour to the city centres. Here you can enjoy shopping in the many shops and markets, watch choirs singing Christmas carols and sample some of the foods traditionally eaten at this time of year, such as Bolo-rei ("King cake"), "filhoses" (traditional deep fried sweet pastry sprinkled with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon) or "rabanadas" (type of French toast). And once you've taken your first step in Portuguese gastronomy, you'll want to keep going! From sweet treats such as our famous “pastel de nata” (custard tart) to some of the best fish in the world, our cuisine features many hallmarks of the World Heritage Mediterranean Diet.
Lisboa - BelémAnd what about some family fun? With an average of over 300 sunny days a year, winter here can sometime seem more like spring, with sunshine up and down the country and temperatures rarely dropping below 10ºC. Days like this make you want to explore the streets of Lisbon on foot, or walk up to the castle or some other viewpoint to admire the view over the rooftops and the River Tagus. But a tram ride is fun and so too is a visit to the monuments and museums, many of which have cosy tea rooms where you can recharge your batteries. From Belém to the Parque das Nações there's loads to see. And outside Lisbon, places like Cascais, EstorilSintra and Mafra should definitely not be missed.
If you hire a car, a short drive will take you from Lisbon to EriceiraPeniche or Nazaré, well-known for their waves that attract surfers of all levels. Other options include UNESCO World Heritage sites such as TomarAlcobaça, Batalha and Coimbra.  If you point your GPS southwards, the Alentejo region has many not-to-be-missed sites, including ÉvoraElvasMarvão and the huge Alqueva lake.
Gerês - Caniçada
In the opposite direction, the northern city of Porto, famed for the wine that takes its name, has its own special charm. This granite city, where old monuments contrast with the contemporary architecture of Serralves or the Casa da Música, has a great deal worth seeing from Ribeira to Foz. Perhaps you could take a boat trip along the river and discover the marvellous scenery of the Douro Valley. Even farther north there are other cities which should also not be missed, such as GuimarãesViana do Casteloand Braga. Or the well-preserved natural surroundings in the Peneda-Gerês National Park and the Trás-os-Montes region, synonymous with authenticity and tradition.
Ferragudo - AlgarveIf you are heading to Faro in the Algarve, you can admire the beauty of the uncrowded beaches or play a round of golf on one of the region's many courses. Other options might include boat trips, bicycle rides, a relaxing spa or some lively nightlife. If your preference is culture, there is plenty to be explored in Faro, LagosSagresSilves and Tavira, for example.

With direct flights to the Azores, there are no more excuses for not getting to know this mid-Atlantic archipelago. There are nine completely unspoiled islands to visit at a leisurely pace. Start with São Miguel and discover all the tones of green in its landscapes and lakes, or with Ilha Terceira where Angra do Heroísmo is a landmark in terms of architectural heritage.
Funchal - Férias de Natal
And then there is Madeira, a favourite destination for New Year festivities. The entire island is decorated with myriad multi-coloured lights and a huge fireworks display heralds the New Year, attracting cruise ships and visitors from all over the world. Another big surprise is the climate. The temperatures ranging from 20ºC to 25ºC are ideal for appreciating all the charm of the local landscapes.

Can you think of a better way to start the New Year?
